The Fire Department Connection (FDC) Breakable Cap (also called breakaway cap, frangible cap, or break cap) is a protective cover installed over the inlets of a fire department connection on sprinkler systems, standpipes, or combined systems. It shields the female threaded or swivel inlets from debris, dirt, insects, bird nests, or foreign objects that could obstruct water flow during an emergency, while allowing firefighters rapid access by simply breaking or knocking off the cap—typically with the butt end of an ax, a spanner wrench, or similar tool—without needing special keys or wrenches.
